Genetic counseling:

What providers
need to know

We Complement Your Care for the
Complete Health of Your Patients

Our board-certified and licensed genetic counselors offer convenient telegenetic counseling. We follow national best practice guidelines for genetic testing recommendations and support your patients through each step of the process.

Referring a patient for genetic counseling creates an opportunity for everyone — the patient, their family, and you, as their provider — to better understand the clinical path forward.

How do I Refer and What is the Process?

Referring Your Patient

If your patient would benefit from genetic testing and/or counseling, we have three easy ways to refer a patient.

Online: Complete our secure online referral form.
Phone: Call us directly at 800-975-4819
Fax: 760-203-1194

Please be sure to have the following information ready when you call:

  • Patient’s full name, date of birth, gender, contact information, address
  • Referring provider’s name, address, NPI, and contact information
  • Patient’s insurance information (if applicable)
  • Information about the suspected condition, any symptoms, etc.
  • Brief family history

What is Involved in the Process?

We make working with InformedDNA easy for providers. Once you have identified the patient who could
benefit from a genetic testing consultation, send the referral and we’ll do the rest.

Once the referral has been received, we will contact the patient within two business days and offer a virtual consultation within two weeks.

We will provide access to InformedDNA’s Patient Portal, where they can manage their appointments, receive reminder notifications, provide personal and family history, and sign consent forms.

The day of the telehealth genetic counseling appointment arrives and patients are seen by our genetic counselors.

If testing is recommended, InformedDNA will facilitate testing.

We will interpret the results and provide post-test counseling to review results with the patient.

We deliver a summary report and lab report to you and your patient.

If desired, we’ll schedule peer-to-peer consultations to ensure you have what you need and can apply it to your patient’s plan of care.

Patient Care is Better When We Work Together

Our team of genetic counselors, pharmacists, MDs, and clinical genetic specialists is here to support you throughout the genetic testing process. We also provide peer-to-peer consultations to discuss any testing or other patient-related genetic health issues to ensure full understanding and transparent patient care.

Patient Education and Resources

Genomic education for patients with a complex genetic disease is essential for understanding both the basics of genetics and the implications for their personal and family health. We offer equitable access to genetic education during the pre- and post-test genetic counseling stages. We are continuously expanding our library of:

  • Virtual and print educational materials
  • Live and on-demand webinars and workshops

Being referred to genetic counselors can be confusing and emotional for patients. Our informative tools and resources help introduce the concept of genetic testing to patients and serve to introduce InformedDNA so that when the referral is made, they’re ready to schedule their appointment and move forward.
